Abhiruchi North Brunswick Review
Abhiruchi Review: Heavenly Rasam; Decent Food and Service
Hey, did we strike gold or what.
North Indian or South Indian, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, Abhiruchi in North Brunswick (NJ) lives up to its name.
Deo gratia. For we're sick and tired of dining at crappy Indian restaurants in New Jersey.
Located in the Ryan Plaza strip mall on RT-27 (next to Patel's Cash and Carry), Abhiruchi offers an extensive repertoire of Indian food - South Indian, North Indian, Indian-Chinese, vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
As is our wont, we let our tastebuds roam and linger across a vast terrain touching upon Rasam, Vada, mini Idli, Upma, Goat Curry, Chicken Curry, Channa Saag, Vegetable Jalfrezi, Spicy Masala Dosa et al.
Much to our delight, most of what we tasted at Abhiruchi turned out to be decent with some items like Rasam, Channa Saag, Upma and Tandoori Chicken falling in the exceptionally flavourful category.
Abhiruchi - Crispy Flavorful Appetizers
The small, evenly cooked Medhu Vada was crisp and tasted nice when soaked in heavenly Rasam.
Upma, not a common fixture at Indian restaurants here, was flavorful and not in the least bit oily. A treat that had us seeking a second helping.
Spicy Masala Dosa, an eternal favorite of South Indians, was huge and came with a large helping of spicy potato-onion filling in the middle. The Dosa also came with Ginger Chutney, Peanut Chutney and Sambar on the side. Boy, was the Dosa flavorful. The mere thought of the Dosa and Ginger Chutney sends us into a drooling fit.
However, the mini idlis were a bit of a let down as they were not cooked properly with raw flour sticking to hands.
Abhiruchi - Heavenly Rasam, So So Sambar
Abhiruchi's Rasam is the kind of stuff that wars ought to be fought over. Hot, sour, pungent and flavorful with right proportion of tamarind, black pepper and coriander leaves seasoning, it was non pareil.
But the Carrot, Onion and Beans Sambar was a let down, tasting more like Dal. It was lukewarm and low on the spices that provide the magical flavor to the Sambar.
Creamy Channa Sag Flavourful Vegetable Jalfrezi, Awful Dal
Channa Sag was creamy and we enjoyed it with both plain rice and Naan. Abhiruchi's creamy Channa Saag was a welcome respite as most Indian restaurants in New Jersey and New York City treat this North Indian curry with contempt and often serve a flavorless green mass with boiled Channa thrown into it.
Set in a medium thick gravy, Vegetable Jalfrezi with Onion, Potato, Carrot, Squash, Brinjal was spicy and a fitting accompaniment for both plain rice and Naan.
Dal with boiled spinach leaves tasted more like mashed Toor Dal without any flavor.
Flavorful Dry Vegetable Biryani, Soft Naan Bread
Vegetable Biryani with Corn, Green Peas and Onion was extremely flavorful with Cinnamon, Cardamom and Clove Masala nicely seeped into the rice. We would've preferred it a tad oily since it was a little dry for our palates.
Naan bread was hot and soft and we had no complaints at all.
Yummy Curd Rice and Mango Pickle
Curd Rice was medium thick and flavorful with Cilantro, Curry Leaves seasoning. The nice thing about Abirudhi's Curd Rice was that it had a fresh taste and was not ice cold like it usually is in most Indian restaurants here. Mango Pickle was spicy, sour and yummy with Curd Rice.
Abhiruchi - Tasty Non-Vegetarian Fare
With the medium thick gravy masala, the Goat curry was very tasty. We enjoyed the curry with both plain rice and naan bread.
Ditto with Tandoori Chicken. Well marinated, tender and came with lots of cut onion.
But the Chicken Curry was a real disappointment.
There were multiple issues with Abirudhi's Chicken Curry - flavorless gravy with way too thick texture and very hard meat.
Abhiruchi - Good Jalebi and OK Madras Coffee
We topped off our fine meal with Jalebi for desserts and Madras Coffee.
Jalebi was slighly high on sugar but warm and crisp.
The hot Madras Coffee was a nice finale to our lunch although we'd have liked the decoction a little stronger.
Abhiruchi - Polite Service
Our Tamil-speaking waiter Bharati was polite, helpful and removed the used plates and filled the water glasses promptly.
