Since we arrived very early for a Tamil movie at CinePlaza in North Bergen (New Jersey) the other day, we decided to make a quick hop to the Indian strip in Jersey City for a meal.

We switched on our GPS and were at Newark Ave, the hub of the Indian market, in less than 10 minutes.

Although Newark Avenue is Chock-a-block with Indian restaurants, our dining experience in the area has largely been disappointing with the exception of Sri Ganesh Dosa House.

So we walked into Angethi Indian restaurant with little hopes of a nice Indian meal. All we expected was a quick lunch before returning to the movie hall.

Angethi had just a couple of tables occupied when we entered but the place slowly started to fill up.

The restaurant is ordinary, no fancy artwork on the wall or fancy furniture.

In fact, the only thing fancy about Angethi is its fine food and good service.

This is a restaurant with more hits than misses
Chilli Chicken came in a rich, deep brown hot sauce. What a delight it was to both behold and to taste. We couldn't have enough of it. As the Bard would say, this was a dish fit for the gods.

The fabulous Chilli Chicken whetted our appetite for more Chinese food.

So we moved toward Vegetable Manchurian, which was as good. Set in a thick, spicy sauce, the Vegetable Manchurian is yummy whether you have it with Naan bread or rice. You can't go wrong either way.

Tandoori Chicken was so-so as was the Chicken Curry. Although not bad, they did not rise to the level of that fine Chilli Chicken.

Chicken Biryani was very flavorful but the chicken pieces in the rice could have been a little smaller.

Angethi is not a haven for meat-lovers alone. Vegetarians can delight in its Aloo Mutter, Amritsari Choley and Kadai Paneer.

A lot of Indian restaurants in the U.S. treat Aloo Mutter with scant respect. As a result, it invariably tastes bland and yucky. But Angethi's Aloo Mutter was hot and rightly spiced.

Angethi's kitchen isn't flop-proof and by way of proof it sent out Vegetable Noodles that were not only disappointing but also had a stale smell.

Desserts were a mixed bag. Gajar (Carrot) Halwa proved to be a disappointment with the dish low on sugar. But the delicious Gulab Jamuns floating in sweet syrup were beyond reproach.

We also enjoyed the Mango Lassi with whipped cream.

Service is another highlight of Angethi. Our waiter Jana, a college student, was a pleasing young fellow and left no room for complaint.

Pleased as punch, we walked out of Angethi promising ourselves that we'd return - and soon - to this fine Indian restaurant on Newark avenue in Jersey City. - © NJIndia.us
