Hot Peppers Indian Takeout Review: Below Average Food, Spoiled Chutney

When we heard that an Indian takeout restaurant Hot Peppers had opened near Multiplex Cinemas in East Windsor, we stopped by the other day.

Hot Peppers is a typical takeout place with a few tables and lack of any dine-in ambiance.

We quickly headed to the counter where we were warmly greeted by a friendly, smiling Indian lady.

Picking up the menu at the counter, we quickly scanned the fairly elaborate list of items and placed our order.

Our takeout order included Vegetable Samosa ($1.50 for 2 pieces) for appetizer, Chicken Curry Masala ($7.25), Baingan Ka Bartha ($7.99), Tandoori Roti ($1.25 for one) for main course and Jalebi ($2.99) sweets for dessert.

Hot Peppers Indian Takeout - Spoiled Chutney, Awful Samosas
Vegetable Samosas included Mint Chutney and Tamarind Sauce.

When fresh, Mint Chutney is usually pungent, spicy and an excellent accompaniment for the Samosa.

Alas, not at Hot Peppers folks! One dip into Mint Chutney and we were horror-struck. Mint Chuntey was spoiled. It had a sour, bad smell and taste.

Disgusting.

Vegetable Samosas were too hard at the edges and the potato filling was a tasteless monstrosity that was devoid of any seasoning.

Tamarind sauce was alright but since Samosa itself was so bad we did not get much joy from it.

Hot Peppers Indian - Hard Tandoori Rotis, Disappointing Chicken Curry Masala
Tandoori Roti was big.

And that's all we can say in its favor. The texture was so hard that we had tough time breaking a piece and eating it. In retrospect, we regretted ordering Tandoori Roti instead of rice.

Unfortunately, the entress Chicken Curry Masala and Baningan Ka Bartha do not come with rice or roti. They have to be ordered separately at Hot Peppers.

Chicken Curry Masala & Baingan Ka Bartha

Of the two entrees we ordered, Chicken Curry Masala was a dissappointment.

We had asked for the Chicken Curry to be spicy.

But the spices added to Chicken Curry Masala were not in sync with each other. It had disproportionate amount of chilli powder compared to other spices.

The clueless bozos at Hot Peppers appear to be unaware that when you make a dish spicy you have to tinker with the mix of the other ingredients as well lest to avoid the curry tasting like plain Red Chili Powder.

Baingan Ka Bartha was spicy and flavorful but a little high on turmeric powder.

Notwithstanding the excess turmeric powder, we still enjoyed Hot Peppers' Baingan Ka Bartha.

Hot Peppers Indian - Stale, Dry Jalebi Sweets
Jalebi, a common Indian sweet, turned out to be another disppointment at Hot Peppers.

Hot Peppers' Jalebi was stale, way, way too low on sugar and dry without any evidence of being soaked in syrup. We did not enjoy it one bit and had to throw away most of it like the hard Tandoori Roti.

Our takeout order did not include paper/plastic plates, napkins and spoons.

Hot Peppers East Windsor Rating - Avoid
By serving spoiled Chutney, Hot Peppers is showing the middle finger to its paying customers and begging them to do the same in return.

Indians are weird people.

Whether in Incredible India or Amazing America, Indians are one of nature's strangest creations.

Truly God broke the mold after creating Indians.

If things don't go their way or if you dare to point out their follies, Indians start behaving in bizarre ways.

A little while ago, a screaming, shrieking Indian lady called us with what appeared prima facie to be a severe case of post traumatic stress syndrome.

For a moment, we wondered if this woman had just returned from Afghanistan after undergoing some severe, ineffable torment at the hands of the cruel Taliban.

Obviously, no one explained to this unschooled-in-phone-manners woman that when you call someone, you start off with saying "Hello," next you introduce yourself and then you come to the purpose of your call. Upon our prompting, she identified herself as the owner of Hot Peppers, an Indian restaurant that NJIndia reviewed recently.

Making excited threats of "I will," "my lawyer," "talking shit," "not kidding," "my restaurant," "an Indian web site," "I need you to," "I will," "my lawyer," "I will," "screenshot," "Yelp" "yes, Chutney gets spoiled in 5-minutes," "Urbanspoon," "if you don't take down the review" the Hot Peppers lady went on and on ad nauseum, ad infinitum till we tired of her feverish rant.

Man, this hyper-excited woman needs a high-dose sedative, we told ourselves.

Any sane restaurateur would have called us to apologize for the "spoiled Chutney" mishap and requested us to provide her with another opportunity to offer better quality food.

After all, mistakes do happen in life and a lot of things can be corrected at a restaurant by paying greater attention to food quality.

Well, not only did no apology come forth from this shameless owner of Hot Peppers but only hot threats of lawsuits, "I will," "my lawyer," "I will," "my lawyer,"....

Hot Peppers belongs to the genre of shameless Indian restaurants that thinks it can get away with serving spoiled Indian food and making threatenening telephone calls about legal action when the truth about its spoiled Chutney is exposed.

Here is NJIndia's considered response to Hot Peppers Legal Threats:
People can fall sick by eating spoiled food, be it a Chutney or a Curry.

Do not ever serve spoiled Chutney to paying customers.

Comprende?

And worse, do not resort to the flimsy, ridiculous defense that Yogurt-based Chutneys get spoiled in 5-minutes.

When Mac sells Oatmeal cookies, they clearly tell customers via a sticker on the packet - "Best Before 7:30PM" or any other time depending on your time of purchase. We found no such warning notes on Hot Peppers' Chutney container.

Also, Hot Peppers is primarily a takeout Indian restaurant and surely it takes more than 5-minutes for most customers to go home after picking up the food.

Going by the feverish, hyperventilating rants of the Hot Peppers owner who called us, we have to assume most of Hot Peppers' customers who buy Samosas are eating spoiled Chutneys.

Sounds scary, eh?

Oh well, we did caution you at the outset that Indians behave in bizarre ways when you point out their mistakes.

Guys, Hot Peppers not only serves crappy Indian food and spoiled Chutney but has the temerity to call us (a paying customer) and threaten us with legal action for daring to speak the truth.

In English, they call such behavior Adding Insult to Injury.

Indian restaurants like Hot Peppers that treat paying customers (hey, we were a paying customer too) with such cavalier disdain and blatant contempt by serving crappy food and spoiled Chutney are completely unworthy of your business.

Instead of resorting to legal threats to NJIndia, Hot Peppers customers would be better served if this East Windsor Indian restaurant pays greater attention to the quality of food that comes out of its kitchen.

As Churchill told the Nazi monsters in his first radio-address after becoming Prime Minister - You Do Your Worst. We'll Do Our Best.
