Spice Corner
Reviewer's Summary: Fine Curries; Lousy Dosa, Poor Service
If only the bozos at Spice Corner in Voorhees (New Jersey) would improve their service, they'd probably get more business considering the restaurant serves fairly decent food.

Located in a strip-mall on Burnt Mill Road in Voorhees, New Jersey, Spice Corner is more of a takeout place with a few tables thrown in and where the food comes to you in disposable plastic plates and cups. So, if you are looking for some pampering or a fine dining experience, look elsewhere because Spice Corner is most definitely not the right place.

You sit at whichever table is vacant, wait for someone to bring you a takeout menu, place your order, wait for the food to come in ready to eat/go plastic plates/boxes and pay the bill.

Unlike most Indian restaurants that stick to North Indian cuisine, Spice Corner serves an eclectic choice of Indian food including Maharastrian, Indian Chinese, North Indian and South Indian fare.
During our visit to Spice Corner, we sampled a variety of items and for the most part we were satisfied.

We tried Maharastrian for appetizers, Indian Chinese, South Indian, North Indian and Non-vegetarian for the main course and Masala Tea for beverages.

Jhunka Bhakar
Our order of Maharastrian dish Jhunka Bhakar came quite hot to the table and boy did it tickle our palates. This quaintly-named item came with one medium size, thick rice flour roti and a side dish made from basin flour, onions and cilantro. Both the roti and the basin flour side dish were tasty and we gobbled 'em up quickly.
For the main course, we ordered a Vegetable Platter, Vegetable Manchurian, Chilli Chicken and Spice Corner Special Masala Dosa.

Being connoisseurs of hot food and hailing from the spice capital of the world a.k.a. India, we requested our waiter (who told us he was from Bombay) to make everything spicy including the Chilli Chicken. And the fella readily agreed.

Soon after we placed our order, yet another waiter (this time, a lady) came out of the kitchen and suggested we change our order of Chilli Chicken to Chicken Manchurian because Chilli Chicken is spicy while Chicken Manchurian is relatively mild. Our first thought was 'where did this retard come from' but we held such opinions to ourselves. In any case, we politely declined her unrequited advice and stuck to our original order of Chilli Chicken spicy.

More Mischief, Ahead
Little did we know that these morons would try more mischief with our order.

You see when we placed our order of Vegetable Platter, the guy who took our order as well as the menu board of the day on the wall clearly informed us that we would be getting Alu Gobi and Mutter Panner as the two vegetables in our platter. But then when we got our vegetable platter the idiots had substituted Alu Gobi with Alu Baingan without caring to inform us. When we asked the same irritating lady about the change in our order, the nitwit did not have a clue as to why Alu Baingan was substituted for Alu Gobi. She mumbled indifferently that maybe the kitchen was out of Gobi and worse, never really cared to look into it or fix the wrong order. Will somebody please throw this clueless, careless retard on the street?

Besides the Mutter Paneer and Alu Baingan, our Vegetable Platter came with two rotis, one plain pappadam, plain rice and raita.

Much to our delight, the Mutter Paneer was piping hot, spicy and tasty. Rotis were soft and came hot to the table and we had no complaints with the onion cucumber raita as well.

We didn't enjoy Alu Baingan since we had not asked for it and it was forced upon us by the buffoons.

Dosa - A Big No, No
Though we did not relish Alu Baingan, the biggest mishap of our meal came via the Spice Corner Special Masala Dosa. We cursed ourselves for ordering it in a restaurant that serves mixed Indian cuisine. You see the Spice Corner Special Masala Dosa did not have anything to be qualified as Dosa leave alone Masala Dosa. It was not crisp and thin. It did not have the usual golden brown hue that makes the Dosa look attractive. Spice Corner Special Masala Dosa was way too thick, soft and white in color. It did not come with any masala paste smeared inside. It came with a huge mass of tasteless potato curry filling. The accompanying coconut chutney was too cold and salty and left a bad taste in the mouth. The only saving grace was that the Sambar, though a little sour, was hot.

Delicious Chicken
Chilli Chicken (this gravy dish comes with plain rice) more than compensated for our unpleasant experience with the Dosa. The chicken pieces were well marinated and seasoned with chillies and tasted nice. A few bites into the Chilli Chicken and we were ready to forgive Spice Corner its transgressions with the Dosa. With rice or the roti, the Chilly Chicken was delicious.

Ditto with Vegetable Manchurian, an Indian-Chinese staple.

The Vegetable Manchurian bowl landed on our table in a hot and tangy sauce and tasted yummy with both rice and rotis.

We topped off our meal with Masala Chai as Spice Corner did not have any freshly prepared desserts on the day of our visit. Masala Chai was hot and came with nice masala flavor unlike many Indian restaurants in New Jersey that merely serve strong tea in the guise of Masala Chai.

If you plan on a sit down meal at Spice Corner, we suggest you carry a bottle of water with you. During our visit, there was no water filter, water jug or glasses in the dining area. Nor did Spice Corner's wait staff care to provide us water until we asked them. We waited and waited and finally in the middle of our food we asked for water.

Notwithstanding the poor service and our unfortunate experience with Spice Corner Special Masala Dosa, we would still recommend Spice Corner to diners for it's one of the better Indian restaurants among the scores of impostors in New Jersey. © Rekha Inc.
