Reviewer's Summary: Good Food & Attentive Service
So what if Amigos fry your Medu Vadas and cook your Sakkarai Pongal as long as they are crispy and tasty.
Tanjore located in the Regal Commerce Cinema Complex in North Brunswick has Amigos working in the kitchen and preparing your favorite Idli, Vada, Pongal or Dosa.
Tanjore's Amigos work under the direction of Chef/Owner Sharmila, who hails from Chennai.
We visited Tanjore recently again after a gap of about eight months and after a fine meal regretted that we'd been away for so long.
Overall, we found the food tasty and service attentive.
We've had Indian food prepared by Amigos at other restaurants and ended up disappointed. Not so at Tanjore. The trick, we guess, is in providing proper training to the Amigos. Kudos to Sharmila, who's also now diversifying into packaged Indian snacks.
We ordered Gobi 65 ($6.50) for Appetizers, Tanjore Thali ($8.95) and Rava Masala Dosa ($7.50) for the main course, and Tanjore special buttermilk ($3.50) to go with with the meal.
Sharmila recommended Sakkarai Pongal ($3.95) for Dessert and we went along with the suggestion.
Tanjore Thali included one Chapati, a small bowl of White Rice, Dal, Mullangi/Carrot Sambhar, Rasam, Potato Curry, Lime Pickle, Yogurt, Madras Pappadam, Medu Vada and Gulab Jamun.
Long after the meal is over, the delicious taste of Dal mixed in Rice and with Lime Pickle on the side lingers in the mind. We swear it's that good.
Rasam and Mullangi Sambhar were delicious both when mixed with with rice as well as on their own.
Medu Vada was hot and crispy, as it should be. Break the Vada into pieces, dip 'em in Sambhar and put them into your mouth piece by piece - Who needs Crack Cocaine when you can get a better high this way!
Rava Masala Dosa came with Potato filling, Sambhar, Coconut and Tomato Chutneys. The Dosa was nothing to write home about and left us disappointed.
While we were pleased with most dishes on our table, our vote for the best item goes to Gobi 65. This appetizer included nine medium-sized Cauliflower florets fried crisp. They were yummy with the accompanying Green Chutney and Tamarind Sauce.
Tanjore Special Buttermilk - a combination of Buttermilk, Lemon Juice and Coriander - is refreshing and we heartily recommend it.
Not many Indian restaurants in the U.S. serve Sakkarai Pongal and we almost jumped with glee when we saw it on the menu. Though cardamom powder was a tad more than required for Sakkarai Pongal, it was still a Dessert worth waiting for.
We topped off a nice meal with a glass of fine Madras Coffee ($3.50).
One disturbing note is that the prices charged at Tanjore restaurant are far higher than listed on its web site. We don't know if this practice is a deliberate ploy or plain carelessness in not updating the web site. In some instances, the rates charged at the restaurant are 75% higher than listed on the Tanjore web site for the same item. - © Rekha Inc.
