Reviewer's Summary: Average Food; Awful Service
Remind us to send a dictionary to the bozos at Vasanta Bhavan so that they can understand the meaning of the word service.

In a meal marked by mostly average food, the pitiful service at Vasanta Bhavan in Hamilton, New Jersey stood out even by the poor service of most Indian restaurants.

From the curt reception we encountered upon entry to the clumsy waiters who attended upon us, Vasanta Bhavan is an Indian restaurant that has yet to master the basics of service.

Even before we could complete our Mysore Masala Dosa, out waitress yanked the Tomato Chutney off our table leaving us to stare at her back in horror.

Before we could recover from this injury, the Caucasian waitress dropped the brown paper table mat right into the plate of our fellow diner. Without an apology, she picked the paper mat from the plate and sauntered off.

Mind you, Vasanta Bhavan is not a restaurant where the food is so good that you can forgive the atrocious service.
Food at Vasanta Bhavan barely makes the average grade with a kitchen whose performance is highly erratic.

Mysore Masala Dosa was far too soft and plain pitiful. Neither the bland potato/onion filling inside or the accompanying cold chutney made the Dosa any better.

But the Bisi Bele Bath (a speciality from the state of Karnataka in South India) was delicious. Amazing, in fact.

Bisi Bele Bath alone makes a trip to Vasanta Bhavan worthwhile. Make sure to try it.

Idli and Vada were alright but nothing to write home about. But the accompanying Sambar was bland.

Channa Masala was so-so as was the Madras Coffee.

Besides the Bisi Bele Bath, our meal at Vasanta Bhavan was marked by only one other standout dish - the Beetroot Halwa.

An yummy dessert made of beetroot, sugar and nuts, the Beetroot Halwa is not a dessert you will find in most Indian restaurants. Go for it.- © Rekha Inc.
